YOUR PATH TO FREEDOM WITH EMDR
It’s not uncommon to battle intrusive thoughts, feelings that seem to come out of nowhere, or the occasional flashback to a situation or event that was and still is charged with negative emotion. In the immediate period after something of that nature happens, it makes complete sense that we would think about it or be impacted by it.
Sometimes months, years, and decades go by and the intensity of the memory, the overwhelming nature of the emotion, or the disruption to your life doesn’t lessen. That may be a sign that those incidents were traumatic – meaning they were so big that your body and brain were not ready to fully cope with them. You are right to be concerned and maybe even hopeless… until now.
Trauma is 100% treatable.
The flashbacks, intense feelings of fear of hopelessness, and resulting impacts on your life are not because there is a problem with you. The problem arises with how traumatic memory is stored. Remember that trauma means that something bigger than we were ready to deal with happened to us, so our memory of that experience isn’t stored like your memories of what you ate for breakfast. There is no clean beginning, middle, and end.
HEALING FROM TRAUMA IS 100% POSSIBLE
Traumatic memory is stored as frozen fragments of memory. You may find that random images of what you experienced, thoughts unrelated to what you are focusing on, emotions that come out of nowhere, or disturbing sensations in your body pop out and throw you off. Those are all fragments of the memory that are coming up as you originally experienced them – or they are frozen in the time that they happened to you. With traumatic memory, the nervous system is not able to ‘update’ or adapt to what happened in the past.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is the first clinically proven approach to treating traumatic memory and its impacts. The process replicates the brain’s natural way of processing information and healing itself.
Unlike exposure therapies where healing is sought through just remembering things so much they don’t hurt anymore, EMDR helps you to revisit the past without reliving it.
As you heal with EMDR, you will find your brain is able to keep and learn from what was useful about the traumatic experience and it will be able to let go of the rest and thereby give you back your life.
